Optimum Relative Humidity: 90-95%
Benefits of CA: Low O2 and elevated CO2 reduce yellowing. СA is of limited benefit if Brussels sprouts are held near 0°C as they should be. If this is not possible, CA may be of benefit for Brussels sprouts held at greater than 5°C.
Benefits of Ethylene Removal: Brussels sprouts produce very little ethylene. However, ambient ethylene can cause yellowing so sources of ethylone should be excluded.
Special Treatments Before Shipping: Brussels sprouts have high .respiratory activity and should be cooled rapidly after harvest and kept at high humidity during postharvest handling. Ensure adequate air flow through the boxes during shipment to help prevent growth of molds. In some cases, Brussels sprouts are packed in boxes with perforated film liners to prevent moisture loss.
Varietal Differences: No differences among cultivars in optimal postharvest handling conditions have been documented.
Mixed Loads: Brussels sprouts are sensitive to ethylene and so should not be shipped with commodities that produce ethylene.
Cautions: O2 less than 1% can cause internal discoloration and off-odors. CO2 greater than 10% can cause injury.
