Special Treatments Before Shipping: Rapid cooling is essential to achieve maximum postharvest life. Harvest at 62-71 newtons firmness for best storage performance.
Mixed Loads: Pears generate ethylene and so should not be shipped with ethylene-sensitive commodities such as kiwifruit, persimmon, carrots, celery, cabbage, lettuce, and some flowers and nursery plants.
Cautions: Low O2 (less than 1%) may cause alcoholic off-flavors. Bosc pears are very sensitive to CO2. High CO2 (greater than 0.1% with very low O2 or greater than 3% with higher O2) can cause core flush, surface pitting, core cracking and flesh discoloration. Unless CO2 can be removed, use 2-3% 02.
