Optimum Relative Humidity: 90-95%
Benefits of CA: Helps retain color and reduce scald.
Benefits of Ethylene Removal: May help maintain firmness.
Special Treatments Before Shipping: Rapid cooling is essential to achieve maximum postharvest life. In Australia, an initial low О2 stress period (less than 0.5%) for 10 days before CA storage reduces the incidence of scald. Harvest at 58-67 newtons firmness for best storage performance.
Mixed Loads: Pears generate ethylene and so should not be shipped with ethylene-sensitive commodities such as kiwifruit, persimmon, carrots, celery, cabbage, lettuce, and some flowers and nursery plants.
Cautions: May develop alcoholic off-flavors under low (less than 1%) O2 or cavitation under elevated (greater than 5%) CO2. Packham's Triumph pears are more sensitive to CO2 injury under low 02 (less than 2.5%).
