Benefits of CA: Low O2 can reduce respiration and ethylene production rates as well as retard ripening. Elevated CO2, combined with less than 10% O2, delays ripening.
Benefits of Ethylene Removal: Ethylene removal may, in some cases, retard ripening and reduce respiration.
Mixed Loads: Durian produce a sulfurous odor as they ripen that will be absorbed by other commodities. They should not be shipped in mixed loads. CA can reduce production of sulfurous odor.
Cautions: O2 less than 2% can result in failure to ripen and gray discoloration of Durian pulp. High CO2 (greater than 20%) can be damaging.
