Benefits of CA: Low O2reduces the respiration rate. Elevated CO2helps retain firmness and reduce decay.
Benefits of Ethylene Removal: Raspberries are relatively insensitive to ethylene and produce very little. There are no known benefits to ethylene removal.
Special Treatments Before Shipping: Raspberries deteriorate very rapidly and can be shipped and marketed for only a few days at best. To maximize quality and shelf life, raspberries should be rapidly cooled to 0°C and kept at this temperature.
Varietal Differences: Differences in response to CA among raspberry varieties have not been documented.
Mixed Loads: Raspberries can be shipped in mixed loads.
Cautions: O2 less than 2% can cause off-flavors. CO2 greater than 25% may cause flesh browning and off-flavors. Proper temperature management is essential. There has been limited use of pallet covers during transport to maintain a high CO2 environment around the fruit to help retard mold growth which is the principal cause of deterioration of raspberries.
