Optimum Relative Humidity: 90-95%
Benefits of CA: Low O2may have limited benefit for okra. Elevated СО2maintains tenderness, retains solids and green color, retards development of soft rot and maintains high mucilage.
Benefits of Ethylene Removal: Okra produces very little ethylene. However, ambient ethylene can cause loss of green color so sources of ethylene should be excluded.
Special Treatments Before Shipping: Okra is chilling sensitive so it should not be held at less than 7-10°C.
Varietal Differences: No varietal differences in optimum postharvest handling have been documented.
Mixed Loads: Okra may be loaded with other chilling sensitive commodities. Ethylene producing commodities should be avoided.
Cautions: Okra bruises easily and the bruises blacken within hours. Care in handling should be exercised to reduce mechanical damage.
