Optimum Relative Humidity: 90-95%
Benefits of CA: In general, CA has not been shown to be beneficial to foliage plants. CA should not be used unless thoroughly tested and shown to be beneficial.
Benefits of Ethylene Removal: Most foliage plants produce little ethylene but may be sensitive to the effects of ethylene which can cause left epinasty (downward bending), leaf yellowing and leaf abscission.
Special Treatments Before Shipping: Make sure plants are adequately watered but do not over water. Foliage plants should be acclimatized before shipping. Acclimatization of foliage plants includes reduced fertilizer, light and water and lower temperatures for 2-4 weeks before shipment. This reduces the likelihood of leaf-drop during shipment in the dark.
Varietal Differences: Foliage plants vary greatly in their chilling sensitivities, ethylene sensitivities and postharvest life. Many foliage plants are chilling sensitive and can be injured by exposure to temperatures less than 13°C. Therefore, loads of mixed foliage plants should be transported at moderate temperatures. Shipping conditions should be guided by experience with each kind of plant.
Mixed Loads: Do not ship with ethylene producing commodities.
Cautions: Many potted foliage plants are chilling sensitive and should not be exposed to temperatures less than 13°C.
